About Us
From the Highlands of Kiambu to Your Cup — Coffee Grown with Purpose
Who We Are
Established in 1956, Komothai Coffee Growers Cooperative Society Ltd is a proudly farmer-owned organization rooted in the fertile highlands of Kiambu County, Kenya. Our Society unites over 11,000 smallholder farmers — including 5,203 women — who depend on coffee as a cornerstone of their family livelihoods.
Through collective marketing, shared resources, and a deep commitment to sustainable coffee production, Komothai has grown into one of the most trusted and progressive cooperatives in the region.

Our Location
Komothai operates on the picturesque slopes of Kiambu County, approximately 40 km northeast of Nairobi, primarily in Githunguri Subcounty, with some wet mills located in Lari Subcounty. The cooperative serves three administrative wards: Komothai, Ngewa, and Kiambururu.
We benefit from:
- Altitudes ranging between 1,700–2,000 meters above sea level
- Rolling volcanic hills offering excellent drainage and air circulation
- A network of clean rivers — including Gatamaiyu, Kanake, Komothai, Gatabiriria, and a lagoon formed by Gatugu Stream — providing year-round water for eco-friendly coffee processing
These unique natural conditions create the perfect microclimate for growing premium Arabica coffee, known for its bright acidity, floral notes, and layered complexity.
What we do
Komothai Coffee Cooperative oversees the entire coffee value chain — from cherry reception to export — ensuring every bean meets global quality and traceability standards.
Our key facilities include:
- 13 wet pulping stations across lower, middle, and upper zones
- A centralized dry mill for efficient, uniform processing
- A modern cupping laboratory (launched in 2024) for rigorous quality evaluation
- Administrative headquarters based in Kigumo Town
